The government knows aliens exist and not only this, they know that aliens are peaceful. If all of the stuff we know about like Area 51 is even remotely true, they have any evidence and it seems pretty obvious. So my theory is that the government thinks that aliens would tell us like, your economic system is killing the planet, let us teach you our ways. Yeah, and they've invested heavily in propaganda films around aliens for the last 70 years.
