There are many Christians who have taught a self-imposed poverty throughout history. That is not the focus of the gospel. God has blessed certain people that can handle money with unbelievable ability to be extremely generous and it's not about wealth. The fear of man is a very real thing. Look at the amount of churches that collapse on orthodoxy because they're afraid of actually coming under some sort of attack.
