Cunning folk operated fairly openly in many communities. And we're often very undeterred by any laws criminalizing their activities. There's definitely the sense that if people are coming forward to defend them from occupations of witchcraft, they were definitely well known. Later you get in the period that they were really active on, especially into the 18th 19th century, you see cunning folk occasionally distributing flyers advertising and print media. So this wasn't super common, but it did happen.
