Bishop Patrick is sent back to Britain by his own church for intervening in Ireland. The British bishops want nothing to do with him because they consider the Irish subhuman. He feels utterly let down by the people he had once considered friends and collapses into a spiral of depression. But he will not be broken. My work is here in Ireland, he tells them, and I will not leave until I am dead.
