The Effect of Opiates in Neuromonitoring

For evoked potentials in neuromonitoring, it's actually a fairly good medication. Opiates can cause neuro-exitation, especially moparity, and high doses can cause seizures. The famous effect of opiates causing constriction of the pupils is through an excitatory impact on the pericympathetic nerve leading to the pupils. Another effect of opiate that you may know well if you've ever tried to push a large dose of remifensinil, or even sometimes can happen with fentanyl or sufentanyl or alfenil: opioid-induced rigidity.
