In 16 fifties he got his hands on a work called fabe fortune. It is a version of one of francis bacon's works, which has kind of been packaged as an essay. And peeps finds this really helpful. Gives him a kind of counsel about how to conduct himself. He also gets his hands on another book, which he starts to memorize about how a gentleman should behave - advice to a son. As he gets higher up, he turns to books about courtiers, which are all about how tremendously back stabbing the court can be beneficial.
