They use asymmetric thrust to steer the plane. The faster you're going, the wider your turn is,. Or if you're going really slow, you can make a lot tighter of a turn. So they're trying to reduce their airspeed to kind of keep their turns tight. That way they're not making these huge arcing turns. They are also, they have the presence of mind to dump fuel to lessen the strain on the landing gear.
