Freud's Connection to Trauma
Freud's theory of trauma was born when he started treating the daughters of Austrian aristocrats for hysteria. In Western Europe, hysteria was considered a medical illness characterized by anxiety and disorganized sexual behavior. Accepting his theory would require them to accept what had been done to their daughters,. Instead, Freud succumbed to the pressure, changed his theory, and the emergent knowledge about trauma lay in the bodies of women.
