The sex hormones that rise with puberty also help drivers to seek out romantic attachments. Kitty and her friends talk about boyfriends, girlfriends, sexuality or that kind of thing. Different people stop puberty at different ages too. There does seem to be some sort of critical mass of fat tissue that one has to have to allow the body to go through this puberty process.
