Spiritual Direction

In western christianity, in the last hundred years or so, spiritual direction has become something you do a training course in. And it's there's a debate going on whether you should only go to somebody who is professionalized. When you speak of friendship, then the sole friend. Are these er trained specialists, or are they just people that are good friends? I think the greatest training still is like a dog living with a bone.
