The phrase "I read the Bible literally" is used as a sort of password for fundamentalist evangelicalism. If you aren't part of that culture, it can be hard to pick up on everything that gets packed into that phrase. In part one, I'm going to talk about all the different ways my tradition growing up used the phrase. And then in a very brief part two, I'll give a few final thoughts on how I read the Bible differently than these meanings under the umbrella of reading the Bible literally.
