What Is a Particle?

A virtual particle is like a different kind of wiggle in this field. It's one that's not self-sustaining, usually caused by the presence of other particles. So an electron whizzing around the universe is making ripples in the electromagnetic fields around us. In some sense it's making virtual particles in that field, which we call virtual photons.
