We learned that people with a lot of trust in science are actually more likely to believe in pseudo science. When scientists primed people to think about thinking for themselves, they were less likely to believe hoods like that. So the takeaway, keep asking questions and thinking critically about the information that you consume. And increasing your scientific literacy will also help, although it will make certain science fiction much less enjoyable.
