The Role of Science Fiction in Imagining Life

The most famous example of a silicon-based life form that I could find in science fiction is the character Horda from Star Trek. In fact, I think right now we're in the process of building artificial intelligences that are not for the most part carbon and water-based. And I would start to call those things living at some point, maybe not yet.
