In chapter five he talks about how novices and experts are fundamentally different. The secret to getting students to think like mathematicians, scientists, and historians? He says practice is important. It makes learning or memory long lasting, and it improves transfer. If you practice more than things become more automatic and more lubricated, more strong connections are there. And so it means that it's easier to think about.
