Are the Donshards a Bond Between Two Things?

In one of delanar's visions, tan vast says that he doesn't know how humanity is going to survive without the donshards. There are a lot of great artistic interpretations of this. In the past don't use shard plate or their blades like humans do to day. And in the first flashbacks, this is kind of your hint that maybe the humans don't know what they're dealing with.
