The Role of Endocrinology in the Evolution of Sex

Starting in the 1910s, children with so-called ambiguous sex became the subject of scientific and medical attention. The clinicians practicing and experimenting on these children with what was called hermaphrodiism were not yet using hormones. Urological and plastic surgeons took the lead in imposing sex changes upon these children.
