History That Doesn't Suck
George Washington's Evolving Views on Slavery
In this chapter, they discuss how George Washington's views on slavery evolved over time. Initially, he was against allowing African Americans to enlist in the army and didn't care much for Northerners. However, he soon changed his tune, welcoming Northerners and enlisting black soldiers. Washington started questioning his role as a slave owner and expressed a desire to get clear of slavery. He resolved never to sell slaves against their will and refused to separate families. As president, he supported Alexander Hamilton's northern economic vision because he knew it would help end slavery. Towards the end of his presidency, Washington strategically used a Pennsylvania law to free some slaves without his neighbors in Virginia knowing. He even expressed his willingness to move to the North if the North and South separated.
