The Atolls of Comer
I went with Ruhau and Creighton across the island, to the Lagoon Beach where her house was. As in most of the atolls, the ground was nearly free from undergrowth. The soil affording nourishment only to the trees and a few hearty shrubs. A bird was singing somewhere, a melodious varied song like that of the hermit thrush. I believe he had some unaccountable defect in his character which kept him aloof from any relationship approaching real intimacy. It may have been that which first set him on wanderings, now happily at an end.
