Ishmael's Voice: A Frame Around the Frame

Are you taking the stance that the commentator is the narrator throughout the rest of the novel? I think it's possible. My preferred reading is that Ishmael gives us the extracts and the etymology. But there's nothing that establishes it as a necessity either.
