There's something else missing in this first movement, traditional thema development normally we would wait until the development section to hear what chosterkovitch really has in mind with this opening theme. So instead, shastakovitch leaves the melody behind. The movement never reaches such emotional heights again. This is sad, tired and lonely music. It seems to have exhausted itself with that one outburst. And remem we're only about three minutes into the piece. There's one more extremely important motive to tell you about in this piece, one that runs throughout the 25 minute work. Here it is.
