The History of Ordeals
The European practice of ordeals began to peter out in the 13th century, particularly starting after the 4th council of the Lateran. Records suggest that something like two-thirds of those who underwent ordeals came out innocent. Pope Innocent III forbade the practice, putting an end to Catholic priests participating in ordeals at least officially.
