Introduction

AI engineer is the new job title for software engineers who work on machine learning. The name was chosen to reflect a gap in the jobs market, where employers are hiring people with specialized skillset and they're training themselves as well. It also reflects this reality that there's a lot of supply constraints in AI - you can't just get by as a non-technical prompt engineer. But if you want to get really, really good at wielding the AI, you have to write code. And I think it's going to continue developing.
