Gerald's Love for Nixon

Gerald could already sense it bubbling. Something close to horror. The eyes rolled around in their sockets, and though they didn't spend more than half a second on any one object, they seemed to linger whenever they looked at the dog's head. Gerald was not about to be frightened of his dog and his house. He was sure he'd learned to love it. And if he didn't, what? It was only ten years. With some tactful persuasion, he might be able to convince Paula that Nixon was great when they were younger, but would now be too much for a growing family. Or they could turn it into fertilizer for all Gerald cared.
