The Republic and the King?

The monarch, although had the title of king, was more like elected president. The nobles even had the right to rebel if they considered the the king had broken the law. It wasn't like anything else in europe, other than, i suppose, so small cities. But the idea that a vast country could be a republic with an elected monarch was very odd indeed.
