The History of the Athenian Democracy
In the years that followed, there was a rash of politically motivated accusations aimed at former members of the 400. These men were put on trial and many were banished, fined, or lost their citizenship rights. This aroused bitter criticism of the democrats by some in the upper classes as this amounted to essentially a political witch hunt. Still, the Athenian democracy behaved with relative restraint when compared to contemporary victors and civil wars in other city states.
