The Importance of Juneteenth
On June 19, 1865, 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, carrying the news that the war was over. Each year thereafter, Black Texans celebrated the day they came to call Juneteenth as a date of their emancipation. Over the decades, Juneteenth celebrations spread to African-American communities across the country. Today, it is a federally recognized holiday.
