Bonhoeffer was involved in smuggling Jews out of Germany, producing fake documentation on the grounds that they were working for the state to smuggle them out. He also becomes involved with a group called Schvartze Capella, the Black Orchestra, who are trying to bring down the German state from within. In part it is... what did he do in about 1939? Well, 1938 he makes his initial reaches reach out. But by 1939 he enters into service directly in that context. And regrets having done that ever after.
