An earlier model in which you have this competitive growth between RNA replication mutations that led to greater replicase activity would result in a more rapid increase in internal RNA concentration, internal osmotic pressure and faster vesicle swelling. We still have no freaking idea how those things could self replicate. So replication is essential, but it doesn't always have to be self replication.
