The ferryman of the title is a man named Proctor. His job is to accompany people who have retired to the ferry that's going to take them to the nursery. So in the opening of the book, he gets a call and he discovers that it's his father. And quickly, everybody knows that things went wrong with his father. You just know there are these, there's a code that sort of passed down that they live by.
