CHAPTER

The Evolution of Consciousness

We often associate self-consciousness with this ability to talk about I. And there may be lots of systems that are have very robust consciousness, but no ability to talks about I because they can't actually represent themselves. But it does evolve during the course of evolution. So as soon as one starts to broaden the notion of consciousness outside of individual humans, one finds that there are no systems that one wants to say are absolutely unable to detect the state of states of their environments. As all systems in fact respond to the states of their environment and many do it in very intelligent ways. so I'm a pretty unashamed panpsychist from that point of view.
