The History of the Spanish Republican Army
In terms of absolute numbers of foreign anarchists, there's various estimates generally between about 2 and 3,000. The anarchist militias were the main kind of military force in Barcelona and Aragon during the early months of the war. They had a very different attitude towards military discipline than the international brigades or indeed the Spanish Republican army. Some of the stories you hear about them can be a bit shocking, perhaps, the idea of voting on military engagements, for example.
