Nietzsche and Thucydides - The Highest Expression of Sophism
Thucydides is so often interpreted as a realist that this interpretation almost goes without saying when discussing him. And yet what isn't often mentioned, or maybe not as often mentioned as it should be, is that the first major writer to characterizeThucydides as arealist was Nietzsche. The opposition between Platonism and Sophism can be stated in the simplest terms then as being analogous to the opposition between moralism and realism. It might be another obvious thing to say to pointing out that Thucydide is the first realist historian of the ancient world.
