Emily Oster is a professor of economics at Brown University and the author of books about parenting and pregnancy. She says we can't always predict what's going to happen in family life, but we can have control over how we make decisions. People are having kids later because they've already accomplished something or done various things that lead them to approach their parenting like they would their jobs. And if you're thinking of your parenting as something to accomplish, it kind of naturally lends itself to a level of pressure different than people had put on themselves earlier.
