The German Pietists Fought a Lot in the Eighteenth Century
Germans of the eighteenth century were particularly prone to anti-intellectualism and xerophobia. The result was an intense inner life, a great deal of very moving and very interest but highly personal, violently emotional literature. German thinkers adored provincialism which gete and schiller fought against all their lives.
