The History of the Paralta Land Grant - Revis's Death
The claim was made by a man named Willing, who died mysteriously. He claimed that he had been given the title baron de los colorados to don miguel de messio silva de paralto de la cordoba in 17th century. The land included phoenix, florence, globe, clifton and safford as well as all the water, agricultural lands and minerals in its range. If revis claim were supported, it would spell ruin for thousands of citizens who occupied ranches or homes. Some people abandoned their homes and land altogether without even trying to deal with revis.
In 1883, Missouri real estate broker James Reavis announced that he held title to a huge tract of land in the Arizona Territory. If certified, the claim would threaten the livelihoods of thousands of residents. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll tell the story of the Baron of Arizona, one of the most audacious frauds in American history.
We'll also scrutinize British statues and puzzle over some curious floor numbers.
