Is There a Public Private Divide in Marie Antoinette's Letters?
Can we take Marie Antoinette's letters as an expression of her private feelings or was there an understanding that they would be read and it wasn't really a private form of communication? I think that's a very good question to which the answer is not one I can give simply. When she writes letters I think you know pulls out her heart. She's somebody who's very direct. If she says something on the whole she means it and she doesn't realize the extent to which some of her letters are passed around or are looked at. The Austrian ambassador sometimes will send comments to the chancellor or copy bits out. And in that respect I think she's almost too trusting in her letters and
