You Fell as a Victim

Shostakovich uses eerie trills along with memories of the first movement to move into the third movement, entitled In Memoriam. It's as if you can literally feel the survivors crawling among the bodies in the blood-stained snow. And almost catatonically, they begin to sing one of the most famous revolutionary songs in all of Soviet Russia - You Fell as a Victim. This song would have been recognized across the Soviet Union by anyone who had heard revolutionary propaganda before and probably even those who hadn't.
