The Office of Censorship
In 1941, just after Pearl Harbor, about 11 days afterwards, two weeks after the strike on Pearl Harbor, we had an executive order, 89, 85. That predated the establishment of the office of censorship. The office of censorship was an office that used voluntary compliance with the press in order to censor information that would be negative to the American war effort. This is where the old expression loose lips sink ships idea came out. It's your patriotic duty to listen to what the government has to say and to do, uh, to keep the negative stories or the stories about the wartime effort under wraps. Those who do not learn their history are doomed to repeat it.
