You Hear Voices and You Can't Function
When he first started writing it, you had a whole lot of trouble because you couldn't find the right voice for the book. The minute i wrote it, i suddenly realized that what i had been missing was that my narrator was another character in the story. So i felt the rightness of it before i even quite knew what all of that meant. It turned out that the i is a prisoner working on the gothic story in a prison writing class. And that insight was just critical to the whole thing.
