Humans are among the very rare animals that have uric acid levels that are quite high relative to cats and dogs, for example. So when we were in medical school, rick, we learned a lot about uric acid through the lens of a disease called gout. The big problem with having too much uric acid is gout, just as you say. And all the animals that have the uricase mutation are prone to gout, but humans in particular are very prone to gouts because of our diet.
