If you learn the pattern of feelings that cause you to behave in a certain way you can learn what those feelings are about and you can consciously feel them. And when you do that you get more choices of behaviors. So I'm choosing wow it'd be really fun to have a second or third martini but it would be more fun to feel good tomorrow. When you don't know you're doing it you'll almost always default to the feeling at a moment. It is easier to if nothing else compare two future feelings.
