America has one of the highest poverty rates of any rich country. The World Economic Forum found that almost 20% of Americans below the age of 15 were food insecure. Poverty is so harmful to us as humans that it's almost literally a disease, a physical one. But like many diseases, it can be treated. A $15 minimum wage is an antidepressant,. It's a sleep aid. It's a diet, a stress reliever. It prevents premature death and its shields children from neglect. Matthew Desmond won a Pulitzer in 2017 for his book Evicted.
