CHAPTER

Drill Instructors in the Marines

In order to become a drill instructor, also known as a DI, a Marine has to complete one term of enlistment and pass a psychological exam. If given they're all clear, they attend an 11 week program where they learn how to teach recruits. In Jake Weaver's experience at Paris Island, there were essentially two training programs that ran parallel to one another. By day, recruits attended classes and completed tactical missions. They completed grueling physical exercises and other tasks that seemed pointless,. Like dangling rifles from their pinky fingers or sitting still for hours at a time.
