The Great Fire of 1835
Fire has been with new york almost since the beginning. The first fire ordinance was that everyone, e by law, had to clean their chimneys between the fort and the fresh water. Around 16 57 is when the sort of first what you could call not really a fire department, but people who are actually out looking fires. They were called prowlers because they also tended to sometimes get up to mischief on top of watching their own city. And stay tuned until the end of the show, because in a newly recorded section, i'm adding another story about a troubling fire which occurred ten years after the 18 35 great fire.
