The Rationalism of John Sones
John Sones is the only non-architect here. He wanted to pick up on this theme of rationalism and what that would have meant for stone. The gallery has red walls which are based on colours that he saw at sort of the excavations in herculaneum, sort of that Roman terra-cottery red. In particular in the mausoleum he's interested in colour but I suppose just on a very restrained scale. Considering on the one hand are found as a sub-front of the gallery at the end of the 18th century as an aid to intellectual enlightenmentbut on the other hand John Sones obsession with light continues to shape our physical experience of the
