In 82 b c, sulla took back rome. Mariuss own son held out against one of sulla's commanders in a siege for many months. Marius junior committed suicide before sulla's troops could capture him. However, marius's former lieutenant escaped to spain and mounted a powerful resistance there. He defied general after general, often using guerrilla tactics. And he formed a rebel state that became a rallying point for marius's partyor the remnants of it.
