Ieyasu Wanted Control Over the Distribution of Purple Robes

Goku Gala Ieyasu tried to control the distribution of purple robes in Japan. He was concerned that standards for getting such a high honor were becoming too lax. The decision was particularly controversial for members of the Rinzai-Zansect of Zen. One year later, heads of two major Rinzai temples wrote a rebuke to Tohugawa Hideyada. They called his whole attempt to regulate who could and could not get a purple robe illegitimate.
