A common response to this story is why is it they walk away not try to change the system or something. Some might argue that there is no system that can provide for great heights that does not rely on to some degree on the suffering of some individuals so I think that is one way to read the story and it's one way that I think is very interesting. It again goes back to our discussions in Snowpiercer and I agree with you that it feels very allegorical like walking away is rejecting a principle rather than anything else.
