Henry Beckett and the Bishops of Northampton
Henry tried to trick the bishops by asking them to swear an unconditional oath. Thomas told him in no uncertain terms disling his hook and his bishop supported him. So what Beckett swore was, I'm ready for your honour and good pleasure but then added the subclaws, saving my order. Henry didn't like the siddle subcores one little bit and he interviewed each bishop individually trying to browbreat them into acceptance. But when they remained firm he stormed furiously out of the meeting and didn't come back,. accusing the bishops that they'd formed a conspiracy against him. After all it surely couldn't be that they actually disagreed with him to get it.
